Recent events demonstrate the concurrent recognition amongst funders and the DRUSSA project team that the Research and Innovation Management Associations (RIMA’s) are vital mechanisms for strengthening and promoting every aspect of Research Management
RIMA’s get significant airtime at INORMS
At the INORMS2014 conference held in Washington DC in April all four RIMAs (the professional bodies for research management in Sub-Saharan Africa) were represented by their presidents and key committee members.
To the DRUSSA Universities benefit, RIMA leadership positions are occupied by DRUSSA University’ leaders and champions. So the universities were actively represented at two exploratory meetings held at INORMS2014, one run by the ESSENCE Group and one run by DRUSSA. DRUSSA programme co-leaders Dr. John Kirkland of the ACU and Diana Coates of OSD also participated.
What came out of these meetings was that there was agreement that having Research Uptake Management presentations at RIMA gatherings and conferences is a most effective way of raising general awareness of the importance of getting research into use. It was also noted that RIMA gatherings are valuable occasions at which to share and discuss the Research Uptake Management systems and processes that are being put in place by the DRUSSA Universities. Finally, there was consensus that RIMAs are effective platforms for delivery of short course training in the Research Uptake field.
As a result of these preliminary discussions, a brainstorming meeting was convened by The ESSENCE Group on the side of the recent SARIMA conference to map a way forward for the sustainability of the RIMA’s.
DRUSSA University representatives successfully advocate for RIMA support
DRUSSA University representatives have been exceptionally active since INORMS2014 in April, advocating and supporting RIMA meetings. As a result, all four RIMAs will have had formal meetings by the end of this year.
Each RIMA recognizes the importance of Research Uptake and has fully supported the scheduling of Research Uptake workshops, discussion groups and presentations by DRUSSA University representatives at their events.
