Communications Professionals from the DRUSSA Universities are working through a coach-facilitated exercise to strengthen their RUC skills while building their University’s Research Uptake Communications portfolio.

Building a University RUC Portfolio

RUC2014 provides a user-centred coaching programme to support the DRUSSA Universities in taking a RUC campaign approach to building a RUC portfolio for their University. Each University’s RUC2014 Campaign pivots on a foundation document selected by the Leader, Champion and nominated Communications Professional. The foundation document is an existing published, peer-reviewed research article from a field that provides gender-orientated solutions to national development poverty reduction initiatives.

“RUC2014 prioritises the strengthening and expansion of DRUSSA University’s RUC skillsets and on building individual University RUC portfolios”

Communications Professionals from DRUSSA Universities are working in collaboration with the author(s) of the selected research article – who has been requested to participate in the rollout of the campaign – to produce three useable pieces of communication material appropriate to the identified audiences and communications platforms chosen.

These include: preparing a brief article that communicates relevant aspects of the selected research to a public University audience for publication on their Universities websites; preparing either a short Powerpoint presentation or a brief radio interview to communicate relevant aspects of the selected research to an end-user audience of community beneficiaries; and finally, preparing an e-newsletter to communicate the impact the selected research has had on end-user beneficiaries and to share insights gained from this RUC2014 campaign to an internal audience of academic colleagues.

"Each module includes background material on the Research Uptake communication objectives for the identified platform and differentiated audience, as well as optional additional reading material."

A user-centered coaching programme comprised of three modules

The RUC2014 Process provide three coaching modules that include information packs and coaching pertaining to the specific communication methods that will be practiced. Each RUC2014 module is designed to strengthen participants insight into each communication method. Each module includes background material on the Research Uptake communication objectives for the identified platform and differentiated audience, as well as optional additional reading material. A structured brief to guide production of a specific piece of communication is a strong aid in the coaching process, which is being done via email and may include skype or telephone coaching where necessary.

Participants have completed a RUC Skills self-assessement and we hope that by the end of this programme participants will have measurably benefitted from the skills and understanding RUC2014 has set out to grow. We’re working hard on reconfiguring very interesting research at the moment, with the goal of completing the RUC2014 Campaign by the end of November 2014.
