To promote the practice of disseminating research outputs to government and commercial entities and to the wider public the University of Addis Ababa College of Natural Sciences (CNS) organized a two-day Research Output Marketing Exhibition (ROME) in 2015. The main purpose of the event was to promote Research Uptake by showcasing research findings where the potential for these to be converted into marketable commodities and/or services is being investigated. The event was also intended to promote the research prowess of the College and initiate and strengthen the ties between the College and the industrial and agricultural sectors.
The College of Natural Sciences (CNS) is a founding campus of Addis Ababa University (AAU). As part of AAU the CNS takes its mission of teaching, research and community service very seriously and is perpetually exerting effort to exceed expectations. CNS has one of the most vibrant and thriving research cultures in the AAU system and is the most prolific publisher of scientific research in peer-reviewed journals. As a university aspiring to be a research-rich university, the AAU has taken important steps in laying a foundation to strengthen university-industry linkages. In step with its parent institution CNS is moving ahead with forging a path towards promoting breakthrough research findings into the commercial realm.
Thus, beyond doing research for the sake of knowledge CNS is also highly motivated to actively direct research projects to be problem solving and development oriented, and to generate knowledge specific to the Ethiopian context. This has lead to researchers and graduate students shifting their focus to work on problems that are developmentally relevant and supportive of Ethiopia’s growing economy.
THE “ROME” EXHIBITION
The “ROME” Exhibition was specifically designed to promote the research of members of CNS. Showcased in the event were the results generated by the faculty and from close to 50 post-graduate programs and over 550 past and present PhD students whose primary advisor is/was a CNS faculty member.
Thirty-four selected marketable research outputs, grouped in five major thematic categories, were presented at the event (Table 1).
The Research Output Marketing Exhibition exhibition was held over two days and was well attended with over 5 500 visitors, including government officials, respected parliamentarians, investors, educators, and the wider public.
Future Plan of Research Uptake Programs at AAU
The University management has decided to incorporate and commit one full week in the University’s annual academic calendar to showcase the University and its research. This will consolidate the significance of research output disseminations to government, the public, industries and other stakeholders. In 2016 AAU is planning to undertake this University-wide research event in early May. The event take will place over a full week and research outputs from the University’s 10 Colleges and 8 Institutes will be presented at the exhibition.
