Welcome to the DRUSSA eAlert for June, which keeps you up to date on DRUSSA activities as well as key Networking events.
In this eAlert we introduce you to a new series of blogs written by DRUSSA sponsored Masters and Doctoral Students at CREST and report on the last Short Course for DRUSSA Leaders and Champions.
 
 
 DRUSSA Masters and Doctoral Students
 
Over the next few months we will be publishing blogs by current and past DRUSSA-sponsored MPhil students in Science and Technology Studies at the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST). A number of blogs have already been published including those by Theogene Nyandwi (University of Rwanda) and Dr Frederick Owusa-Nimo (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Uganda) and make for an interesting read.

Keep an eye out for the next in the series by Dr. Eme Owoaje from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria and Heather Ndlovu (National University of Science and Technology, Zimbabwe).
 
 
DRUSSA short courses

The last of the DRUSSA short courses for Leaders and Champions was held at CREST from 1st to 3rd June. The course reviewed previous short courses and how they fit into the overarching core skillset of a Research Uptake manager. Starting with reviewing the context of Research Utilisation the courses then looked at bibliometrics and scientific impact, managing Research Uptake, and models of research. The final short course focused on developing an M&E framework for Research Uptake Management.

The short course was also an opportunity to highlight the programme resources including the full "Literature Review On Knowledge Utilisation" report.

 DRUSSA Vice-Chancellors'  Seminar

As reported in the May eAlert DRUSSA held its milestone Vice Chancellors’ Leadership Seminar on 11 May in Johannesburg, involving executive and senior university leaders from across the DRUSSA programme. Discussions on the day were highly productive and insightful, as Vice Chancellors had the opportunity to engage directly with each other and with programme partners, to reflect and share institutional visions, and discuss approaches to building robust and sustainable Research Uptake systems.  

In the weeks since the event, DRUSSA programme partners have incorporated the discussions, case studies and key outputs discussed at the Seminar into a new briefing document. The Summary Report for the DRUSSA Vice Chancellors’ Leadership Seminar (2015) has now been disseminated to Vice Chancellors across the programme, and is soon to be made available on DRUSSA.net.

In addition to a background summary of the DRUSSA programme’s strategic approach and its key initiatives, as well as an introduction of plans for the DRUSSA community over the next 18 months the Summary Report is intended to synthesise the wide-ranging discussions held at the Seminar within the framework of DRUSSA’s wider strategic objectives.
 
 
 DRUSSA at the ACU-SARIMA Conference in May 2015

At the 2015 Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA), co-sponsored by the ACU, which took place from 10–15 May in Johannesburg, the DRUSSA programme featured in the "Pathways to Uptake" strand of the conference in a joint session with  CAAST-Net Plus. A number of DRUSSA universities were represented in this strand including:
 
 
CREST on-line course on Science Communication

Registrations are now open for the second online course on "Science communication: An introduction to theory, best practice and practical skills". This course will commence on 5 October 2015 and wrap up on 15 December. It consists of six online sessions over 6 weeks, followed by about 4 weeks to complete a practical project.

 SARIMA Workshop on the Basics of Research Contracts

SARIMA is running a training workshop on the "Basics of Research Contract Management" from the 23-24 July in Johannesburg. This workshop will look at the contract and financial aspects of research contracts. More information and a link to registration can be found on the SARIMA website.
