TRAINING: DRUSSA Research Uptake Communicators
Two training and collaborative learning events for DRUSSA's Research Uptake Communicators (RUCs) were held in Johannesburg last week. The Science Communication Train the Trainer course was held on the 4th and 5th of April, and the RUC 2016 Campaign Review workshop took place on the 6th April. As Prof Yogi Naik, DRUSSA Champion at the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe noted after the three days of intensive training and discussions, the online Science Communication resource provided a "recipe book" of ingredients and the RUC 2016 workshop was a hands-on experience about "how the cake is baked"!
Fifty three RUCs nominated by the 22 DRUSSA Universities, attended the workshops. They return to their universities prepared to run science communication training courses for researchers, and to complete their RUC2016 campaigns.
More information about the Research Uptake Communicators Train the Trainers web-based resource will be published in the DRUSSA Digest which in May. The resource will be published with creative commons copyright, and will be open access.
The workshops provided an vital opportunity for participants to share their RUC experiences, review their university research uptake websites, and discuss their plans to continue to strengthen their Research Uptake communication teams' capacity in their universities.
The RUC Handbook, a compendium of resources built up over the four years of mentoring and collaborative learning is available on the DRUSSA.net site
GOOD READS ON DRUSSA.net: the DRUSSA Fellowship Programme
The DRUSSA programme has been working with academic institutions and government departments in Ghana and Uganda in order to link the supply and demand side of Research Uptake. This is being done through symposia, professional development courses and a Fellowship scheme which places academics in government departments, allowing in-house government access to research expertise.
As part of our series of interviews with DRUSSA Fellows, we talked to Dr Rose Omari, who has been appointed as a Fellow in the Women in Agricultural Development (WIAD) Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Ghana. You can read about her experiences here
Dr James Atta Peprah (from the Microfinance Unit in the Department of Economics at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana) participated in the Fellowship scheme and worked with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and he talks about his experiences here
